The Creative Call: An Artist’s Response to the Way of the Spirit

Hello. I thought about going though a different kind of devotional. It’s called The Creative Call: An Artist’s Response to the Way of the Spirit by Janice Elsheimer. “This is to reach out to many of who long to live more fully in their creativity but don’t know how to find or renew that artistic passion. ” I highly recommend this book to any one who has any kind of passion as an artisan (writer, poet, gardening,painter, potter, musician, gourmet cook, the weaver, the stained glasser, the photographer, ect).

Here’s something from the first chapter “A New Beginning”-

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.” -John 1:1-3

“I’ve always loved the image of Jesus as “the Word”. The Word, through whom all things were made, is both the expression of God’s creativity and God’s own son, Jesus Christ. what a powerful image for artiste who are just beginning to awaken their creativity: the Savior as the Word, through whom all things were made. Through the Word, the process of creation began. And through God’s Word, our creative renewal will begin as well.” (pg 9 The Creative Call)

The Artist’s Creed

I (we) believe my talents are a gift from God, and I am to use them to fulfill his purpose in my life an in his world. I humbly acknowledge and accept my gifts as I ask to receive God’s vision for how I am to use them. I ask the Holy Spirit to free me from self-doubt and self-absorption. I pray this work will bring me into closer alignment with God’s plan for me as I sekk to bring my gifts and talents into his light and to become he whole and complete person he intends me to be. Amen.

What is an artiest? The American Heritage College Dictionary defines: “one who creates imaginative works of aesthetic value.” 2dn definition:”one whose work shows grat creativity or skill”. So, what do you think an artist is?

•Write three words or phrases describing how you feel when you allow your artist self to take over.
•What do these words or phrases tell you about what creative activity once meant (or means) to you?
•Now thins about how you feel when you are doing “adult”, responsible things with your time. Write three words or phrases that describes how you feel when you are engaged in activities that don’t involve your artist self.
•What does this exercise tell you about how you view these two sides of yourself
This book is great. “Here you will further recognize and develop your creativity as you enter a closer relationship with your Creator.”

About me. Well, let’s start with God. I love God and his goodness and loving mercy. Also, I love people. Especailly kids. I love to see happy kids and when I work with them at work or even at church it is especially amazing to see them begining their own relationshoips with the Lord. Also, I love art. After all I do have a degree in Graphic design- but I love working with any medium. I find it (art) to be a great way of expressing oneself and ultimatly a venue to reach out to people. Well, to sum it up- I guess my slogan is: Love God, Love people, Love Art.
